5 Fun Outdoor Winter Activities for Kids

Fun Activities for the Snow!

Now that weather has finally hit Oakville with some snow it’s time to really enjoy Winter. Kinder Buddies Oakville daycare has assembled a list of five awesome outdoor activities for you to enjoy with your little ones.

1. Snow Castles –  Break out your beach toys: shovels, sand molds, and buckets. Sand molds make perfect sculptures and are so simple for the kids to use! Personally I think the Snow Castles stay together a lot better than sand. Sand stuff packed away? Simple alternative would be different sized plastic cups.
2. Tobogganing – Sledding is a great way to spend the afternoon at any age. The smallest kids will enjoy being pulled around while older kids can take the challenge of hills. Make your Sledding afternoon at the park even more special by bringing along a thermos of hot cocoa and some cookies to snack on.
3. Ice Skating – When it’s cold outside there are many great outdoor rinks available for free. While looking up a local outdoor rink make sure to check for rentals. Most rinks will have skates, helmets, and even skating learning aids for your youngest kids.
4. Snow Colouring – All of that white stuff in your backyard is just begging for some colour! Fill a few water bottles with water and some food colouring for some safe snow paint. For extra fun make different sized holes in lids so the kids can make thin lines as well as thick lines!
5. Bird Watching – This last one requires a little more patience but is worth it. Go to a park (or your backyard) and set up a bird feeder. With snow on the ground it’s a lot harder for our feathered friends to find food. Soon you and your kids can break out a book on birds and start identifying all of your new friends. For an extra crafty spin on the idea there are many recipes online to make your own bird feed ornaments that you can leave in the park.

It’s easy to stay cooped up in the winter months, hopefully one of these activities will help you and your family get some fresh air in a fun way!
