The Magic of Imagination

Magician, Magic
Silly Miss Tilly

This week Kinder Buddies Oakville Daycare had a magical friend visit. A visit from a magician is always a “magical” thing. While even every day things can be new and magical for children, as adults it is easy to be skeptical. While things like math and science can be taught any adult will tell you creativity, imagination, and invention are almost impossible to learn or be taught. This is why it’s so important to nurture a child’s natural instinct of exploration and imagination: Inspire, Encourage, and Create.

Although imagination seems to come from no where there are many ways to inspire creativity and imagination in children. While you may already be reading or watching tv shows with your kids, try to make sure the content covers a large amount of topics. From Fairy tales to Outer Space the more subjects your child is exposed to the more they have in their imagination tool box.

Use their favourite toys and books to encourage imaginative play. Have them re-tell the ending of their favourite book or even use the characters in a different world. When your kid starts explaining an imaginary world ask questions, show interest in their ideas. Colouring and drawing are both great ways for kids to convey the things they create with their imagination.

Nothing is more magical for kids than when their ideas come to life through creation. Excellent craft ideas can come straight from your kids. Turn their drawings of castles into reality by using legos. If your child is interested in Pirates, build a ship with them out of old cardboard to sail the high seas. If you are great with a sewing machine, there is a cute trend of turning children’s character drawings into actual stuffed animals. Having their ideas physically created is an awesome motivator for learning and creation.

When the kids come home today with stories of their magical time with the Silly Miss Tilly continue the magic into the weekend. Remember to Inspire, Encourage, and Create to preserve the magic of imagination!
