Animal Visit

AnimalWorld

This week we at Kinder Buddies Oakville daycare had the pleasure of having some animals over at the daycare for the children to learn about and play with. We had: Rabbit, Chinchilla, Guinea Pig, Turtle, Snake, Spider, and a Hedgehog! We want to share some cool facts about these animals!

Hedgehog

Rabbits
– More than half of all the rabbits in the world live in North America!
– A rabbits ears can be up to 10cm long.
– The biggest breed of rabbits the Continental Rabbit can grow up to 50 pounds!

Chinchilla
– Of all land animals, Chinchillas have the softest fur.
– Chinchillas are nocturnal and prefer to sleep during the day and play at night.
– A chinchilla can jump up to 6 feet high. That’s almost higher than the average size of an adult human!

GuineaPigs

Guinea Pig
– Guinea Pigs are very social and love to be kept in pairs or in groups.
– Like most rodents a Guinea Pigs teeth never stop growing which is why they like to chew on things to wear down their teeth.
– The oldest Guinea Pig ever lived to 15 years! Almost twice the average 5-7 lifespan of most Guinea Pigs.

Turtle

– Turtles are one of the oldest species being alive for more than 200 million years. That’s longer than humans!
– There are plenty of different types of turtles, many can be found in our own Canadian fresh lakes.
– While turtles primarily live in the water they will come onto sandy beaches at night to lay their eggs.

snake

Snake
– There are absolutely no snakes in New Zealand
– Snakes, like most reptiles, cannot regulate their temperature so they need sunlight to keep them warm.
– While snakes seem scary most are shy and just want to be left alone.

Spider
– There are spiders on every continent except for Antarctica.
– Spiders have no bones but instead an exoskeleton that protects the spiders body.
– Most spiders live for around 1 year while some Tarantulas can live for 20 years.

Hedgehog
– While a Hedgehogs quills are pointy and sharp they are not poisonous.
– When scared, a Hedgehog will curl up into a ball using its quills to protect itself.
– Hedgehogs can run over six feet per second!

Hope you had fun learning more about animals with us.

Best of all, all of the animals featured make great pets as well!
