Baking with your Little One for Mothers Day

To children Mothers are superheros that can do anything. One of my favourite activities with my mother was learning to bake. I always had fun, and my mother made sure it was a learning experience. (Math and Science!) For mothers day kids want to spend time with their Moms and usually find a way to make something unique for their mom. Start a new tradition of baking this Mothers day! We have assembled tips for even the smallest children to help out.

1. Shopping: Read the ingredient list with your child. Give them a little basket (even bring your own) and have them carry the lighter ingredients.
2. Measuring dry ingredients: For kids that are a little older it’s a great opportunity to get a math lesson in. For smaller kids you can just have them fill the measuring cups/spoons.
3. Mixing: Mixing dry ingredients (and wet if you are confident) with a whisk is simple.
4. Rolling/kneading Dough: If baking anything with dough kids will love playing with the dough kneading and using the rolling pin.
5. Cookie Cutters: If you’re making cookies one of the easiest (and most fun) tasks is using the cookie cutters!
6. Icing/Decoration: Let your kids get creative. You can even work with your child in advance to plan the “theme” of your dessert.
7. Timing: Have you child set a portable timer for your dessert. They can keep it with them while they wait. Always set a second alarm just for yourself (just in case).
8. Clean up: The most important and easiest task will be clean up. Help them wash big pots/pans in the sink and show them how to load the dishwasher.

Things to keep in mind while baking with your kids:

• Teach them proper food safety along the way ex: Hand Washing
• Take the time to explain all of the tools you use, what they do, and where you keep them in the Kitchen.
• Set aside more time than you usually would. Learning takes time!
• Practice makes perfect. Mistakes will be made along the way and that’s all part of the fun!
