Healthy Summer Treats for Kids

Healthy Summer Snacks, man and child in kitchen

We are in the middle of summer and Halton region is hotter than ever! Our favourite way of cooling down includes some nice cold treats. Today we at Kinder Buddies Oakville Daycare go over some of our favourite chilled and healthy treats!

Frozen Yogurt Tubes

If your kids love yogurt it’s very easy to freeze them! Pop tubes into the freezer for a few hours and you have a nice healthy, sweet, and chilled snack!

If you don’t have the tubes you can put popsicle sticks directly into the small containers of yogurt. Then you can eat the yogurt like a popsicle. Keep the lids on when you put in the popsicle sticks so the stick stays in place.

Frozen Fruit

Frozen Grapes

Many fruit taste great frozen, but frozen may be the best way to eat grapes. This works with white or red grapes; just pop them in the freezer for a day. For kids with a sweet tooth, frozen grapes taste even sweeter right out of the freezer.

Frozen Bananas

Banana’s are another great choice for freezing. You can cut bananas in half and put them on a popsicle stick. Roll them in yogurt and then add a topping of choice like cereal or dark chocolate chips. Throw in the freezer for a few hours and then it’s ready to eat!

Flavoured Ice Cubes

Ice cubes are amazing for keeping drinks cold but as they melt they dilute the drink. Consider instead setting aside an ice cube tray to create fruit juice ice cubes! Some great options that freeze well:

  • Apple Juice
  • Orange Juice
  • Coconut Water
  • Grape Juice
  • Lemonaid

Home Made Popsicles

If your kids love popsicles consider making some at home with healthier ingredients. You may need to go out and buy popsicle molds, but they are easy to find at grocery stores, dollar stores, or online on Amazon.

On top of adding thinly sliced or puréed fruit, some other additions can include:

  • Fruit Juice
  • Yogurt
  • Honey
