How to Commemorate Black History Month with Kids

It’s Black History Month – a time for us to celebrate and recognize the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. While Black History is something we should continue to educate on and celebrate year-round, this February is the perfect opportunity to educate and inspire our next generation by teaching them about the significant events and people that have shaped our past. An abundance of events and initiatives arise to commemorate this history, some of which we’ll share in our blog.

These activities and events explore some creative and meaningful ways to commemorate Black History Month specifically with your little ones. From crafts to historical exhibits, we compiled some fun and educational activities that will help you and your children celebrate and honour the rich history of African Americans. Join us as we take this journey through time, learning, and appreciation.

Check out a local museum or art gallery

During Black History Month, many museums and galleries make a special effort to highlight and showcase the iconic works created by black artists as well as commemorating history forged by black trailblazers and addressing the challenges that the black community faces today.

Whether your family is interested in exploring the impact of slavery on black culture, discovering the contributions of black innovators and leaders, or simply admiring the beauty of black art, a local museum or art gallery might be the spot for you.

Visit your local library

Libraries are a treasure trove of information and resources, offering access to books, magazines, and other materials that shed light on the experiences and achievements of black people throughout history. Just like museums, your local library may have a special showcase for Black History Month with materials like biographies of influential black figures or storybooks featuring black lead characters.

You might also be able to get your hands on documentaries, films, and other multimedia resources that can help you gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and richness of black culture. Your local library might even host events, such as book clubs or discussions, that are focused on black history, especially black history local to your geographic area.

Visit your local bookstore

Visiting your local bookstore is another great way to educate your littles ones about black history. Many bookstores offer books for all ages that explore the struggles and achievements of black people. From memoirs by black authors to works of historical non-fiction, your little ones can learn more about the lived black experience.

Attend local events

Your local communities may host events throughout the year that are focused on the rich heritage and culture of the black community, but they’re more frequently accessible during February. These events are diverse in nature and offer everyone education about black history. Check out Black History Storytime at the Ontario Science Centre.

Support black-owned businesses

Supporting black-owned businesses is a meaningful way to celebrate and preserve black history. Black-owned businesses have played a vital role in shaping the economic and cultural landscape of our economy, and giving back to those businesses is a great way to honour them. By supporting these businesses, you’re not only helping to sustain their efforts, but also demonstrating your commitment to the ongoing legacy of black entrepreneurship and achievement.
