Managing Sun Protection for Babies and Young Children

It’s the middle of summer. That means you and your little ones have spent a lot of time out in the sun. Or, maybe you haven’t, and you’re planning on getting out there. Whatever your situation may be, your little ones require extra love and care when it comes to protecting themselves from the sun. The sun yields so many health benefits — both mental and physical — but can also be dangerous. Keep reading for some tips on managing sun protection for babies and young children.

Limit sun exposure during peak hours

Limiting sun exposure during peak hours for your little ones helps safeguard their skin and overall health. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be particularly harmful during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when they’re most intense. Planning outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon can significantly reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.

Dress for the sun

When venturing outside during peak hours, it’s essential to dress children in protective clothing, like brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts, and to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF. By taking these precautions, you can ensure that children and babies enjoy their outdoor adventures safely.

Apply sunscreen wisely

When choosing a sunscreen for your little ones, opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF — ideally, SPF 30 or higher — to ensure protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Before heading outdoors, generously apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of a child’s body, including the face, ears, neck, arms, and legs. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more frequently if they’ve been swimming or sweating. Avoid applying sunscreen to infants younger than six months; instead, keep them in the shade and dress them in protective clothing.

Stay hydrated

Encourage kids to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty, as thirst is not always an accurate indicator of hydration needs. Make it a habit for children to carry a water bottle with them and take regular sips, especially during hot weather or when participating in sports. Additionally, offer them hydrating snacks like fruits and vegetables that have high water content.
