Toddler Snow Activities (Home and Oakville)

Snow Actvities. Family playing in the Snow

It’s been warm a few days but Oakville is expecting more snow tonight! We’ve had more snow than we know what to do with this winter in Halton, and kids still want to play outside. No need to dread snow days, today we have created a fun list of snow activities to enjoy with your little ones.

Snow Activities for Toddlers at Home

These snow activities are great for your yard so no need to head out to the park. Parents can keep an eye on little ones without going far.

Snow Forts

We have had more than enough snow recently to be able to build some impressive snowmen or snow forts. If your kid wants a more impressive fort consider helping them make snow “bricks” to stack. You can use sand castle molds, specific snow fort brick molds, or even rectangular buckets or planters can be repurposed.

Snow Painting

If you have an artsy toddler who likes a little bit of mess create some snow “paints” with some water and food colouring! Recycle disposable water bottles with some water and different coloured food colourings. Poke a hole in the top of the cap and kids can now “paint” in the snow by squeezing the water bottle.

Science Experiment: Bubbling Volcanoe

A messy experiment of baking soda, vinegar, and food colouring can be taken outside in the snow! Have your little one create their volcanoes out of snow and hollow out the middle with a plastic container inside. In the plastic container add two tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dishwashing soap, and a few drops of food colouring. When you’re ready to see the “explosion” pour in some vinegar.

Bring Out the Sand Toys

Head back into your summer toy stash and let kids play with their sand toys in the snow. Molds, shovels, and buckets are all just as fun to play with in the snow. All the fun of heading to the sandbox without needing to go to the park.

Set Up Some Snow Inside

If it’s just too cold to stay outside consider getting a small bucket and filling it with snow. Set up some towels, it may get messy, but kids love to experiment with snow as a part of a sensory activity! Allow them to play with waterproof toys in the snow and feel the snow with their hands, no gloves are necessary. It’s also a fun science experiment to watch the snowmelt in just a few hours.

Local Halton Snow Activities for Families

No need to stay home! If you want to head out on the weekends as a family we have gathered a list of places and things to do in the snow in Halton.

Tobogganing in Oakville

Tobogganing is one of my favourite childhood memories growing up, and the snow often doesn’t last very long in the GTA. Grab a sled or a Magic carpet and head to some hills around Oakville. Some great hills in Oakville include:

  • Old Abbey Park (1110 Old Abbey Ln)
  • Tannery Park (5 Walker St)
  • Memorial Park (120 Oak Park Blvd)
  • Bronte Creek (1219 Burloak Drive)

Snowshoeing/Cross-Country Skiing

If you have your own gear no need to drive very far to upgrade your hike with snowshoes or skiis. Bronte Provincial Park (1219 Burloak Drive) has lots of trails that allow snowshoes or skiis for cross-country skiing.

Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding

If your family is into more thrilling activities there is Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding nearby in Milton at Glen Eden Park (5234 Kelso Road). Unlike Bronte Creek Glen Eden is a full ski hill with equipment available for rental as well as private lessons available for purchase (in advance).
